In Vancouver Speaking as Futurist at Western IUG

I gave a talk this morning at the Western Canada Innovative User Group (WCIUG) about futures near and far to a great group of librarians from British Columbia. WIUG2014

The WCIUG brings together libraries from across Vancouver and the wider BC region that are in the Innovative Interfaces ecosystem. Hosted at Capilano University in North Vancouver by University Librarian Grace Makarewicz. I met Grace at the Future of Libraries event put on by Jane Dysart and Ken Haycock in Vancouver last autumn.

My role was to challenge and help participants to let themselves be inspired. I outlined near future library roles (accelerating
serendipity, facilitating creativity) and explored several key technology areas that are impacting opportunities in the library irelax coffeendustry (the Amazon media streaming box “Fire TV,” Facebook and Oculus Rift as well as drones for access, Microsoft’s Siri competitor, Bitcoin, Android Wear for a wearables operating system, Arduinos/Raspberry Pis and easy making/coding). The focus was on the now going forward made powerful by insightful audience questions – British Columbia librarians have a sharp eye for the future.

The far future will come as we design it if we take the reins and let our creative selves guide our joint future.

The rest of the event’s program included break out sessions, presentations from regional librarians about solving disconnects between library partners within an beyond our ecosystems and round table updates, discussions about moving forward, and updates from Innovative Interfaces directors. switch board

We also had a wonderful tour of the Bosa Center for Film and Animation. Great to see the animation studios and sound stages.

Thank you for our wonderful hosts at Capilano University and the great British Columbia librarians I have met.
